In this short video I visually demonstrate the most important ventilator settings on an actual mechanical ventilator. The most important ventilator settings to understand as a nurse include: frequency, abbreviated f which represents the minimum respiratory rate, tidal volume, abbreviated VT which represents the amount of air given to the patient with each breath, FiO2 or fraction of inspired oxygen, and PEEP, positive end expiratory pressure.

The most commonly used mode of mechanical ventilation is volume controlled ventilation. In this mode of mechanical ventilation, the provider programs a target tidal volume; however, the pressure necessary to deliver the target volume will vary. Advantages to this mode include a stable tidal volume and minute ventilation. Disadvantages include potential volu-trauma with decreased lung compliance such as in patients with ARDS.
